VOLATILE DUETS

This is a short-form creative study invites students to devise and perform a 30-60 second duet exploring volatility, resistance, and physical tension. The goal is to discover how energy shifts—whether sudden, explosive, restrained, or collapsing—can communicate relationship, conflict, or connection without words. The duet will draw on contact improvisation, following your impulses, breath scoring and basic boundary practices. Your duet should include elements of gesture, flow, weight, collapse, and redirection. You should consider how to balance technical control and emotional surrender, active listening with bold risk-taking.

By the end of this exercise, you will have:

  • Explored volatility as an embodied concept through movement, basic fight skills, and weight-sharing.

  • Develop awareness of listening with the body in partnered improvisation.

  • Experiment with rhythm, collapse, and recovery as dramaturgical devices.

  • Practice giving and receiving constructive peer feedback in movement-based work.

Composition

Using your pieces we began in class on October 6 you and your partner should begin to create a 30 - 60 second duet that includes:

• At least one moment of sustained tension.

• At least one unexpected release or collapse.

• A clear shift in movement quality (soft → sharp, heavy → light, etc.).

• Students are encouraged to use repetition or motif but should avoid over-choreographing.

Consider how each move leads/flows into the next and create a structure that flows. Feel free to explore with levels and depth, allowing yourself to travel through space when necessary. You are making a moving composition and in doing so you should consider where we are watching this.
