The Raven
In Class Activity
Students will memorize and perform a section of The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, exploring the relationship between language, body, and presence. This activity emphasizes theatrical stillness, spinal alignment, and the principles of the Alexander Technique as tools for grounding, awareness, and expressive control.
Students will engage in guided exercises to refine posture, balance, and release of unnecessary tension, developing sensitivity to how small physical shifts affect tone, clarity, and emotional resonance. During performance, students should focus on moving with intention—allowing stillness, subtle gesture, and vocal expression to work in harmony.
This assignment assesses each student’s ability to integrate technique with expressive storytelling, demonstrating mindful physical choices that enhance both the poem’s imagery and their embodied performance.
Assessment
Students will be assessed on the following: Physical awareness and intentionality; alignment and posture through the Alexander Technique; use of breath and support in vocal projection; clarity of stillness and controlled movement; embodied presence and poise in performance; integration of text, body, and voice.
